January 2016 in Alberta’s Capital

A brand new year in Edmonton comes with brand new opportunities, dreams, and resolutions. Not to mention amazing events! So if you’re dreading to hit the gym like you told yourself you would, maybe step outside and hit up these great festivals instead!  
… And then go to the gym, you procrastinator.   
Winter Sunday Brunch
When: Every Sunday January – March
Location: Johnson’s Café in the Hotel Selkirk
Enjoy a delectable meal at a wonderfully historic site! Expect classics like scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, salmon fillets, roast beef, and more on the menu. There will even be a chef-attended omelette station if you’d like something a little more tailored to your liking. And don’t forget about dessert! Deep Freeze: Byzantine Winter Festival
When: January 9th – 10th
Location: Between 91 – 94 Street on 118 Ave
Come to the 9th annual Deep Freeze with its mystical theme of Fairies, Elves, and Ogres! This year will feature many outdoor events such as the Chisel and Chainsaw Ice Carving Competition, the Mischievous Fairies Projection Mapping, and the Winterus Maximus Chariot Races. If you’re looking for even more excitement, there will be the Street Hockey Tournament and the Cool Runnin’s Deep Freezer Race! If the cold is too much, step inside for the Art Gallery Show and Sale. This will include the Nina Haggerty Centre for the Arts (9225 – 118 Ave), The Carrot (9351 – 118 Ave), and The Studio (11739 – 94 Street). Edmonton MS Whiskey Festival
When: January 13th at 7 – 10 pm
Location: Edmonton Delta South
Enjoy a lovely evening of Whiskey tasting, music, and art in support of the MS Society of Canada, Alberta Division. Not only will you support those affected by multiple sclerosis, but you’ll indulge in a night of 175 whiskies from around the world with the opportunity to speak directly with distillery representatives. Funds raised during the event will go directly to funding research dedicated to finding a cure and to services for those affected by MS. Ice on Whyte

    Celebrate the 13th annual Ice on Whyte Festival with its Mardi Gras theme! With over 500 blocks of ice, there’ll be plenty of the frozen stuff! Take in amazing ice sculptures, carving classes, and the ATCO Gas International Ice Carving Competition featuring professional and novice artists from around the world. There will be plenty of music, crafts, movies, and face painting for the whole family. And, of course, being in Old Strathcona means access to over 100 destinations for delectable delights! Dark Matters
When: January 21st at 7 – 10 pm
Location: TELUS World of Science
Come out to an 18+ event at one of the most delightfully nerdy places in town, the TELUS World of Science. With the theme of Aurora, this month’s Dark Matters is all about celebrating the beautiful skies of the frigid North. There will be light painting with florescent dyes, watching celestial events, a live DJ, and a bar and special café menu to indulge in. Brain Storms: UAlberta Creates
When: November 25th – January 23rd
Location: 10230 Jasper Avenue
Head down to the University of Alberta Museums Galleries at Enterprise Square to see hundreds of creative and visually inspiring art from University of Alberta Alumni in support of the University of Alberta Alumni Association. With over 130 featured alumni from nine different faculties, there will be a myriad of work to see! Go here for additional info.

      Summer is packed with festivals, too! Tons! You and Jane wouldn't freeze to death then :P
